Second time around and still as entertaining as ever . . . Ang Bagong Harana serenades like no other. Whether you are Filipino or not, you will enjoy listening to the wonderful voices of the Philippine Opera company singers. The show takes you to a musical journey from the past to the present with songs that are funny, romantic, sad as well as evoking national pride. The choreography and arrangement keeps us glued to the stage as the songs alternate from happy and upbeat to sad and meditative.
The Ramon Obusan dancers present a visual treat of costumes and dance routines that add to the show’s progression. Alive, interesting, and no dull moment is how I would simply describe the whole show. It’s a show for the whole family to enjoy together, and perhaps it will even save you the trouble of describing to your kids what life was like in the old days. A presentation of our country’s history in glimpses and with a great audio system, how cool is that?
So take that musical journey with your family with Ang Bagong Harana from The Philippine Opera Company. Directed by Floy Quintos, the musical, which translates to a modern version of the old, traditional courtship songs, features music from the best Filipino composers such as Nicanor Abelardo, Ryan Cayabyab, George Canseco, Willy Cruz, Francisco Santiago, Antonio Molina, Resti Umali, Ernany Cuenco, Levi Celerio, Jose Estrella, Constancio De Guzman, and Felipe de Leon. You have got to listen to these wonderful renditions.
The superb cast is composed of celebrated singers Al Gatmaitan, Marvin Gayramon, Karla Gutierrez, Lawrence Jatayna, Charley Magalit, Aizel Prietos, Nazer Salcedo, Jack Salud, Marian Santiago, Janine Santos and members of the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group. Hats off to the musical arrangers: Jessie Lazaten, Von de Guzman, and Paolo Zarate.
