Chances are your child will never experience what it was like to have just one telephone in a home shared with three sisters and two parents, no cable tv, just a single desktop computer. It was a daily waiting game and the telephone was the means to spend time with your first love.
Back then, the telephone was everything. It was your social life when you were not allowed to go to a party. It was the means to communicate with friends and sometimes meet new friends. It was your contact to the outside world. It was the “friendster” of the time, where the voice created the first impression for a guy.
The advantage then was that early on, you know the sound of his voice and the way he spoke. The moment he misrpronounced a word, you’ve made your decision whether to push through with the date or not. As much as it’s exciting to hear your secret crush’s voice, the phone can also be annoying at times when someone you are not interested in keeps calling and can’t take a hint. “Oh no, siya nanaman” and other thought balloons popping out of your head when your mom yells your name. During the call, you keep yawning loud and keep going “hmmm, I’m sorry what did you say again?” and he still doesn’t get it. Then you finally hang up the phone so it won’t wake up your parents late at night. Before Caller ID, let’s not forget those callers who keep calling but not answering the phone . . . and when they finally do, they say “Puwede bang makipag-phone pal?” So you slam the phone and try to hang it so they won’t keep calling again and again. Yep, PLDT has been with us through good and not so memorable times.
Even just using the term telephone will make you seem outdated and your kid may even laugh at you since its called a landline or a mobile nowadays. Well PLDT telephone is now 85 years old and it’s time to celebrate those happy, as well as annoying, memories, with an FB photo contest of you or a family member together with a PLDT telephone. Who knows, you may just win that gadget you’ve been longing for.
