Secretary Herminio ‘Sonny’ B. Coloma, Jr., Chief of the Presidential Communications Operations Office in Malacanang will be the keynote speaker in this year’s National Communication Research Conference (NCRC). Now on its third year and annually convened by the University of the Philippines – Communication Research Department , the conference is considered as the biggest gathering of communication research experts and students from various communication and journalism schools in the country. It is co-convened by two professional communication groups, the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE) and Philippines Communication Society (PCS).
The conference, whose theme is “Communicating Risk”, set on February 7 and 8 at the Cine Adarna of the College of Mass Communication at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City, will also gather not only the academic community but media practitioners and executives, bloggers and other experts in communication and media as well. Timely and relevant as today’s issues, it will focus on the importance of communication research as an academic discipline and essential tool for better understanding of various issues and subjects that affect and impact daily life where man-made and nature-induced risks and disasters happen intermittently.
Current chairman and president of the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) and former cabinet secretary Atty. Jesus G. Dureza will be plenary speaker on reporting risks and disasters.
Both Coloma and Dureza were media practitioners before they entered government service. Dureza, now a full-time publisher of Davao-based Mindanao Times and head of the fifty-year old Institute, continues to advocate and champion causes on disaster and conflict mitigation.
Bulacan-based journalist and senior reporter of Mabuhay Newspaper Dino Balabo and DJ Yap of Philippine Daily Inquirer will also be resource persons on reporting risks and disasters.
